Sportsman's Park was packed for the opening game of the 1944 World Series of the St. Louis Cardinals playing the St. Louis Browns.

Ray Sanders struck out for the second out of the first half of the inning. Denny Galehouse is pitching for the Browns. Mike Gonzales (25) is the Cardinal Coach (10-4-44).

In his first ten games, the 21-year -old Vern Stephens knocked in ten runs, and got himself a pair of home runs. The Browns called him up from Toledo where he batted .281 in 1941.

Sig Jakucki's 13th win on the closing day of the 1944 season gave the Browns the pennant in the American League. Trailing the Yankees 2-0 in the fourth inning, Jakucki got a two-run homer from Chet Laabs and then a three-run blast by Laabs to seal the win.
